Thannk you for this website. I visited Zanzibar as a new born baby, a child of six and then at the age of eleven.This was in the 1950s. I was happy to see a photograph of the Pereira de Lord photographers and fine arts store. I am related to a branch of the de Lord family so saw them during visits on school holidays. I was told that my Grandfather was the Portuguese Council in the early 1950s when he died soonafter. There is no note of the Embassies so I could not track down my ancestars who lived there. Thank you again for bringing back very happy memories of my visits to Zanzibar which seems such a long time ago. However, I would have liked to track down my grandparents who lived there. Barbara

The website is so nice I saw and read things which I never expect to hear about with lots of history from the past, as well as history from the European to the Arabs who went and rule the Island... I wish this people would still be there rulings Zanzzibar. But now it seems the people from Mainland (Tanzania) are trying to invade our beautiful Island. I can see that most of the Police Commanders mentioned on the news have got funny names, like the one's from Main Land not originated from Zanzibar. Just 10 years and lots of changes, what about the next decade? Please help our Beautiful Islands.....The Islands are sinking from the present rulers.... HELP HELP :(

IMPORTANT BUSINESS ADVICE SOUGHT. High profile western investor thinking of investing in Zanzibar, may include a relocation of a number of businesses and personel. Before any comitment need guarantees that the CUF have toned down there xenophobia against so-called "mainlanders". Anyone know if the Zanzibar region of Tanzania is CCM or CUF run, as I do not think we could do business under a bigoted CUF climate including the distablisation of this part of Zanzibar through protracte CUF speratist agitation. Recieve reports of Arabist CUF mobs attacking and murdering "mainlanders" and Black Africans in general. Worried about the security of a number personel has we are a international company and this is reflected amongst some of our most highly trained and valued employees who are African-Americans and Caribbean.Would not want to go down the Saudi route of ex-pat compounds. What would the Arab-wannabe bigots of the CUF who are obsessive in stiring up hate against Black African "mainlanders" (even if they are Muslim) say! or dose this website belive there is room for only one religion... Islam and one race... Arab in Zanzibar! I propose, 1 an annual "mainlander" led Muslim pilgrimage and festival to Zanzibar (CUF's Hamad would turn on his walking stick!) 2 an annual Christian pilgrimage and festival to Zanzibar. 3 an annual Multi-faith/traditional African pilgrimage and festival to Zanzibar. 4 a huge international festival dedicated to celebrating Pemba's and Unguju's African heritage. 5 Traditional African laws to be incorparatedand administered in Zanzibar. *mainlander..... xenophobic and seperatist term coined by Arabist/Islamic CUF and other Arab supremecists to dubb Black Africans present in Zanzibar (even if Muslim) and other parts of Tanzania.

A Very informative site, although looking through the posts, it seems a lot of people seem to think you are biased, not sure why. Anyway don't really have a disire to visit as have quite a few other countries well in front of this one to see first although looks a pleasent place to stay. and not sure what all this waffle is about Allah in alot of posts, cant people just say, nice website keep up the good work withought bringing millions of blessings in to it. i'm from Nigar.i had oppotunite to visited Zanzibar by islamic travel group at 1996.i filt i reached the breezing of the havene .people are nice and beauteful on out side and in i guess because there were so great tome and every body else in my journey.some people were so sadly for how they been treating by their own gorvment that was taugh me on my heart,i wish i could do some thing to remove that sandness away from kindness people like them,but that was no my fight.i trust them eventualy they will complet their fight.since then i keep read their news paper(ippmedia.com)see the mainland leaders make Zanzibaries fight themselve that awefull see such things like those .it's goin end up like my country and all will be talk on the air "we would knew.we would stoped these long time .is too late.thanks i wish all the best to Zanzibaries, i never forget you kindness,God knows

The peaceful tolerance of diverse peoples, which was always a feature of Zanzibari". Was it so tolerant when 100,000 African slaves were shipped through Stone Town? Was that part of the tolerance? Thank you for this most interesting Website. My Grandfathers older brother was Captain for the Sultans of Zanzibar somewhere between 1887 and 1892 (on their newly built yacht) ... I have a newspaper article here which I will send on to Barghash. Also a Diary written by Knud Detlefsen's wife where there is mention of the Sultans of Zanzibar and their newly built yacht. Most of the people who are about 40-45 years now and lived in zanzibar/Pemba could recall their memory by seeing alot of pictures/history of those paradise days when zanzibar was under the rule of the Sultans.
